Participant Application & Selection Process

It should be understood by all parties that the activities and purposes of Flight 40:31 require a high degree of dedication, sustained motivation, excitement and determination as well as mental aptitude.  Flight 40:31 is not for everyone nor is everyone right for Flight 40:31.

To maximize the likelihood that each participant will complete the program (i.e., earning of a pilot’s license) and to minimize the chances of disappointment in any regard during the latter stages of the program, Flight 40:31 is obligated to have in place a rigid application process. 

This application process will consist of the following stages in the order shown:

  • Completion of brief application form
  • Conversation about prospective participant between school counselor and a representative(s) of Flight 40:31 to discuss prospective participant’s grades, effort, dedication, personality, etc.
  • A brief meeting between a minimum of two Flight 40:31 representatives, the prospective participant and his /her family members to discuss the program and determine the level of family support (it is preferred that this meeting take place in the prospective participant’s home).
  • Eye exam and color blindness test.
  • Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) physical exam.
  • Prospective participants will be asked to address board members to explain why they would like to be admitted to the program; family members will be strongly encouraged to also participate in this meeting.
  • Signing of waiver of liability document.
  • If accepted, participant will be notified by the Director.
